A day before the door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines flight on Jan. 5, engineers and technicians for the airline were so concerned about the mounting evidence of a problem that they wanted the plane to come out of service the next evening and undergo maintenance, interviews and documents show. But the airline chose to keep the plane, a Boeing 737 Max 9, in service on Jan. 5 with some restrictions, carrying passengers until it completed three flights that were scheduled to end that night in Portland, Ore., the site of one of the airline’s maintenance facilities. Before the plane could complete that scheduled sequence of flights and go in for the maintenance check, the door plug blew out at 16,000 feet, minutes after embarking on the second flight of the day, from Portland to Ontario International Airport in California. The plane landed safely and no one was seriously injured, but the incident focused new attention on Boeing’s manufacturing processes and the safety procedures followed by airlines.

Researchers at the tech job board surveyed 6,166 of the site's registered users and visitors near the end of 2023 to understand how tech workers feel about their salaries. But despite making almost double the amount the typical American does, tech workers surveyed reported feeling increasingly dissatisfied with their salaries. Tech workers early in their careers reported feeling more dissatisfied with how much they make than those with over 15 years of experience. "Now that companies are right-sizing staff and their salaries, they're also limiting bigger increases on salaries that became standard in previous years." Still, challenging economic conditions don't necessarily mean it's impossible for tech workers now to land a highly coveted, well-paying job.

By the time the documentary “High & Low: John Galliano” enters its second hour, you have learned a little about its titular subject’s life. You’ve learned about his childhood in England, his time studying fashion in school, his habit of indulging to excess. Mostly, you have witnessed the unfolding of one of the most exalted careers in high fashion, a decades-long spectacle filled with sensational designs, leggy beauties and air kisses, all set to the drone of millions upon millions of dollars in annual sales. As interviewees chatter and declaim, Macdonald regularly cuts to runway imagery, which is certainly more enjoyable than enduring Galliano’s prejudices. There’s a surfeit of beauty, though the visual quality of the archival material is suboptimal until the shift to digital.
